Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How much do portraits cost?
A: Prices vary depending on the size of the board and the individual image. Current pricing for available sizes can be found on the CUSTOM WORK page on this site.
Q: Can you do multiple animals in one drawing?
A: It depends on your reference photos. Some photos work really well together and can make a great composition, but others do not; in which case I will suggest a set of coordinating separate pieces instead. Multiple-subject portraits can be no smaller than 8x10" and start at $1200.
Q: Do you work from photos or do you have to see the animal in person?
A: Photos.
Q: What kind of photos do you need?
A: The clearer the better. Scratchboard is a very detailed medium, so the more detail that is visible in your photo, the more I can include in the drawing. The subject of the drawing will be at the exact same angle and positioning as it appears in your reference photo, so make sure to provide exactly what you want for the best result.
Q: Can you make up details if my photo is low quality?
A: It's possible, but ideally no. Photos of very low resolution or that are blurry do not make good reference for a detailed medium such as scratchboard. If a low quality photo is the only thing available, as is the case with many memorial projects, email me to discuss options. Never say never :)
Q: How long does it take?
A: Turn around time varies depending on the piece and availability. Scheduling is usually done several weeks to months in advance.
Q: What the heck is a scratchboard?
A: Scratchbord, made by the Ampersand Art Supply company, is a 1/8" (one-eigth of an inch) thick hard board coated entirely with black ink that I scratch off using an exacto knife or other sharp/abrasive tool to create the picture. More info can be found on the About page of this website.
Q: How do I frame it or display it?
A: I recommend professional framing with or without glass if you prefer to hang the piece on a wall. Since the board is thick, it will not fit perfectly into most frames that you will find on a store shelf. The board can also be displayed on its own without framing (such as on a stand); once the varnish is applied the boards are very hardy and can be dusted/wiped off and handled without damaging the drawing.
Q: Can you make me a painting on a canvas, a pencil drawing, or any other medium?
A: Generally, no. I work exclusively in scratchboard when it comes to commissioned work, although once in a while I may deviate and offer a unique project for a short time or have a painting available for sale. The best way to be informed of these chances is to follow me on social media or join my mailing list.
Q: Will you draw humans?
A: Nope! Animals only please - the textures involved with human skin and clothing are not usually conducive to a great scratchboard portrait.
Q: My friend/spouse/child's birthday is next week. Can you make a portrait by then?
A: Generally, no. All custom work is honored on a pre-scheduled basis at the time a piece is ordered, which usually leaves me booked for a few weeks to months at a time. However, a rush order may be accommodated for an additional fee if it is possible to do so without interfering with the completion of another client's piece.
Q: How far in advance do I need to order a portrait if I have a deadline?
A: The sooner, the better. I generally book out several months in advance and have a limited number of spots for the calendar year.
Q: How do I order a portrait?
A: Review the current information on the Custom Work page on this site.
Q: How do I contact you?
A: If you've reviewed the information on the Custom Work page and would like to discuss your idea, you can submit the form there or reach me via email to allierainesart@gmail.com. If that page displays a message that custom orders are closed, feel free to reach out but know that I will not book any new orders at that time.
Q: When and how do I pay for my portrait?
A: All payment transactions are conducted via digital invoice at the time of booking. Payment methods accepted include credit, debit, ACH/bank transfer, CashApp pay, and gift cards purchased through this site. You will have the option to pay your invoice all at once up front or in a series of installments. If you choose to pay with installments, your portrait will only be shipped once all payments have been made and you have no outstanding balance. If your portrait is complete and has an outstanding balance for more than 90 days beyond the provided expected completion date, it will be considered forfeit and will become available for sale to the public.
Q: What about refunds?
A: Your deposit at the time of your order is 100% NON-REFUNDABLE. The deposit covers cost of materials for your piece and secures your place in my roster, which takes away a spot from another potential customer. If for any reason you decide to cancel your piece at any point during the process after you have paid your deposit, your entire deposit will be forfeited but you will not owe the remaining balance for the piece.
Q: What about shipping fees and taxes?
A: Taxes and regular shipping fees will never be added on to your total for a custom piece shipped within the US. However, if expedited shipping is required and agreed upon, the cost incurred will be added to your balance. A $50 international shipping charge will apply for all pieces outside of the USA.
Q: Are you on social media?
A: Yes! You can follow me on Facebook on the Artwork By Allie Raines page, or @allierainesart on Instagram and Youtube.
